How Crucial is First Aid in an Emergency Situation?
For some people, it is frightening to be in an emergency situation, but others are able to use the adrenaline positively, solving situations quickly and saving people’s lives. But even if you don’t consider yourself a hero, there are plenty of first aid tips you can learn to get away with it. You don’t need to be a specialist in emergency medicine or undergo paramedic training because first aids are not meant as a definite solution to the emergency. It is what ordinary people should do before medical personnel comes to help.
In this article, we will show you how easy it is to apply the first aids in three different situations (heart attacks, fainting and seizures), and how such minor actions change the outcomes when medical attention arrives.
First aid tips for heart attacks
If someone has chest pain, there’s no immediate way to confirm whether or not it is a heart attack. The best thing to do is loosen his clothes, have the patient sit down and hand him his meds if he has a heart condition. You may also give him aspirin to chew and call 999/998 for medical help.
People who don’t know what to do would rush the patient back and forth, upsetting him even more and aggravating the heart condition. In most cases, they call for medical attention after 1 hour or more, and anything can happen during this prolonged wait time.
First aid tips for fainting
If someone has fainted around you, there’s no way to know whether he’s recovering consciousness right away or after a moment. Quickly lay him flat on his back and elevate his feet. Loosen his clothes and check there is no obstruction in the airways and he can breathe properly. If you find something stuck, take it out gently, and if there’s vomiting or blood, put him onto his side. Call 999.
By completing this simple procedure, you would prevent the individual from choking and would increase the chance of him recovering consciousness faster. When the medical team arrives, they will take care of the most complicated part of the procedure.
First aid tips for seizures
There are different types of seizures, but the one that often requires urgent medical attention is called “tonic-clonic” seizure. It is the typical seizure with jerking movements people usually recognise.
In this scenario, the most important is being calm and try to clear the way to protect him from injury. You don’t need to stop his jerking movements. Instead, focus your attention on protecting the head and making sure he has nothing in the mouth or the airways. Place a hard object between his teeth to prevent him from biting his tongue and wait for medical attention to arrive.
